Off-piste skiing in Ylläs

Skiing in Ylläs is not only limited to the groomed trails. More and more skiers have found new challenges and experiences outside the groomed slopes. In Ylläs, it is easy to start off-piste skiing since there are plenty of off-piste areas between and next to the marked slopes, which offer a great opportunity to get to know the secrets of deep snow. It is good to work on your technique close enough to the lifts because there is no risk of avalanche and you get plenty of repetitions.

For more experienced off-piste skiers, the unmarked fells of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park offer unlimited route options from easy Sunday rides to adventurous crags. However, when leaving the marked areas of Ylläs to the National Park area, the skiers must have the required knowledge and skills in snow safety. Avalanche beacon, avalanche probe and a shovel are basic equipment for every off-piste skier and you have to know how to use them if needed. There is no risk of avalanche in the ski resort area but in the unmarked fells in the National Park area the risk has to be taken into account.

Ylläs Ski Patrol is a voluntary group that monitors the snow conditions of the unmarked fells of the national park. They are also the first – and the only in Finland – to forecast the local probability of avalanche. The forecasts are made weekly, and always when a swift change to the risk level occurs. In addition, the Ylläs Ski Patrol is in co-operation with the Finnish Meteorological Institute by sending them snowpack measurement information. The Finnish Meteorological Institute will use this information as one of their source in compiling the local avalanche probability forecast for Northern Finland.
